Salem’s AQI hit 139 that morning (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups) while temperatures were approaching 100 degrees. Open the windows and you get smoke. Close them without AC and you get heat. Run the AC wrong and you may be pulling smoke inside anyway.

This is the specific bind Salem homeowners face during wildfire season, and it’s one that generic HVAC advice doesn’t resolve. Oregon’s recent wildfire seasons have made this more than a theoretical concern. Understanding what your HVAC system actually does during a smoke event and what it can’t do is the difference between managing your indoor air quality and making it worse.

Why Wildfire Smoke Is Different From Everyday Air Pollution

The primary health threat in wildfire smoke is PM2.5, particulate matter 2.5 micrometers or smaller in diameter. These particles are small enough to bypass the upper respiratory tract entirely and penetrate deep into lung tissue. Standard air pollution involves coarser particles that the nose and throat catch; PM2.5 doesn’t behave that way.

Smoke also carries volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon monoxide, benzene, and formaldehyde. These are gaseous compounds, not particles, and no fiber-based filter removes them regardless of its MERV rating. Filter upgrades address the particle problem meaningfully; the gas-phase problem requires different technology entirely, such as activated carbon or whole-home air purification systems.

Salem’s geography extends the exposure window longer than most residents expect. The Willamette Valley sits on a valley floor prone to temperature inversions. When a layer of warm air traps cooler air and smoke at ground level, smoke doesn’t disperse with the wind the way it does in open terrain. It stagnates at the elevation where Salem homes sit, sometimes for days.

The August 4, 2026 advisory captures the problem precisely: a wildfire smoke event and a heat advisory arriving together. Closing the house keeps most smoke out but turns it into an oven. Most HVAC and air quality guides aren’t written for this scenario, because most guides come from markets that don’t deal with triple-digit heat and hazardous air simultaneously.

For homes with central air conditioning, the answer is recirculation mode. When the system is set to recirculate, it draws return air from inside the home, conditions it, and pushes it back through the supply registers without opening the fresh air intake to outdoor air. The home stays cool, and the air being filtered is the air already inside, not the smoke-laden air outside. This is the correct operating mode during an active smoke event.

One thing that undermines it: exhaust fans. Running a bathroom fan or kitchen range hood during a smoke event creates negative pressure inside the home. That pressure differential pulls outdoor air in through every gap in the building envelope, around window frames, under doors, through unsealed penetrations. During active smoke, exhaust fans defeat the purpose of keeping the house sealed.

What Your Current Filter Is & Isn’t Doing

Most homes run MERV 6 to MERV 8 filters. Those ratings are designed to protect HVAC equipment from large debris like lint, hair, and dust clumps, not to catch PM2.5, which is roughly 30 times smaller than a human hair. During a smoke event, a standard MERV 8 filter lets the majority of the most dangerous particles pass straight through.

The EPA recommends upgrading to MERV 13 for wildfire smoke events. MERV 13 captures particles in the 1 to 3 micron range at roughly 85 percent efficiency, which covers PM2.5 meaningfully. The EPA also found that running the system fan on the continuous “On” setting rather than “Auto” (which cycles the fan off between conditioning calls) can cut indoor PM2.5 concentrations by roughly half, because air passes through the filter more frequently.

There’s a risk most homeowners don’t anticipate: a saturated filter doesn’t just stop working. As smoke particles accumulate and static pressure builds, a heavily loaded filter can begin re-releasing captured particles back into the airstream. During an extended smoke event, check your filter every two to three days. If it’s visibly gray or brown, or if airflow from your registers feels noticeably weaker, replace it. A dirty filter working against you is worse than no filter at all.

Before You Upgrade: The MERV Compatibility Warning

Higher MERV ratings create greater airflow resistance. A MERV 13 filter is denser than a MERV 8, and that density makes the blower motor work harder to push air through it. For a newer system designed to handle higher filtration, this is usually manageable. For older equipment (particularly the forced-air systems common in South Salem’s established neighborhoods) the added resistance can restrict airflow enough to strain the blower motor or cause the heat exchanger to overheat. Oregon DEQ’s own wildfire response guidance acknowledges this directly: home heating and cooling systems may not be compatible with MERV 13 or better filtration. Compatibility depends on the static pressure capacity of your specific system. The right step before swapping to a higher-rated filter is a professional static pressure assessment, not a trip to the hardware store.

Window air conditioning units and single-hose portable air conditioners are a separate issue. Window units draw outdoor air through the unit as part of their normal operation; running one during a smoke event introduces smoky air directly into the room. Single-hose portables exhaust air to the outside, creating the same negative pressure problem as exhaust fans. During active smoke events, neither should be operated without a smoke-rated filter attachment.

How to Monitor Salem’s Air Quality in Real Time

Knowing when conditions cross into action territory is half the battle. Two tools are worth bookmarking. The Oregon DEQ’s OregonAir mobile app, available for Apple and Android, pulls near real-time AQI data from monitoring stations statewide, including stations serving Marion and Polk counties, and shows current readings by your location rather than a statewide average.

OregonSmoke.org publishes the Oregon Smoke Blog with daily smoke forecasts, advisory maps, and data from temporary monitors deployed near specific active fires. When a fire is burning close to the Willamette Valley, the site often has more localized data than the statewide AQI number reflects.

A practical threshold: an AQI above 100 marks the air as unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and anyone with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions. Salem reached 139 on August 4, 2026 and climbed to 157 by August 6, a reading in the Unhealthy range for all residents regardless of health status. At that point, the sealed-house-plus-recirculation approach isn’t just advisable; it’s the only reasonable indoor strategy.

After the Smoke Clears: What to Do With Your HVAC System

Clearing skies don’t mean clean indoor air. During an extended smoke event, PM2.5 settles into ductwork, coats surfaces inside air handlers, and embeds in filter media. When the system runs after the advisory ends, those deposited particles recirculate through the home. The first step when conditions improve is replacing the filter, even if it was recently installed.

Some situations call for a professional inspection rather than a DIY filter swap. Persistent smoke odor from supply registers after a new filter is in means the ductwork itself has contamination a filter replacement won’t address. Weak airflow that doesn’t recover, or visible soot accumulation around supply register grilles, are both signs the system needs a closer look.

For Salem homes with older systems, duct leakage is worth addressing as a longer-term concern. Ducts routed through attics and crawl spaces are a direct smoke infiltration pathway during events, because those unconditioned spaces fill with outdoor air.
