Signs Your Heating System Needs Professional Attention

A heating system doesn’t have to stop completely to require urgent attention. A furnace or heat pump that runs but can’t maintain the thermostat setting may have an airflow, control, ignition, electrical, or heat-transfer problem that requires diagnosis.

Contact us to assess heating problems such as:

No heat: The furnace or heat pump won’t start or produce warm air.
Short cycling: The system starts and stops repeatedly without running long enough to maintain comfort.
Cold air: Air comes through the vents but remains cool during a heating cycle.
Unusual sounds: Banging, grinding, or other new operating noises develop.
Pilot light trouble: The pilot light is out or has changed to an unusual color.
Uneven heating: Some rooms remain cold even while the system is running.
Electrical trouble: The breaker trips repeatedly, the thermostat loses power, or the equipment produces an electrical odor.
Unexpected energy use: Utility bills rise without a corresponding change in household heating use.

Gas, Carbon Monoxide, & Electrical Safety

Some warning signs require you to leave the equipment alone and move to safety. Don’t try to locate a gas leak, inspect hazardous electrical parts, or relight equipment under these conditions.

Follow these safety boundaries:

If you smell gas: Leave the property and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location. Don’t operate switches or use equipment inside the home.
If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds: Move everyone to fresh air and contact emergency services. Don’t use the heating system again until it has been evaluated as safe.
If you notice smoke, sparks, or a burning electrical odor: Turn off the system only if it’s safe to do so, then arrange a professional inspection.
If a breaker repeatedly trips: Don’t continue resetting it. Repeated trips can indicate an electrical problem that needs professional assessment.

What an Emergency Heating Repair Visit Involves

We begin with the symptoms you’ve observed, including when the problem started, whether the system runs, and whether you noticed an alarm, odor, noise, or breaker trip. Our technicians then assess the equipment and operating conditions associated with the failure.

Depending on the system and symptoms, an assessment may cover:

The thermostat and electrical supply.
Airflow and blower operation.
The ignition system or pilot assembly.
Safety controls and heat exchanger indicators.
Applicable heat pump components.

Once we identify the issue, we explain it, provide an estimate, and answer your questions. Repair decisions depend on the diagnosed failure, equipment condition, safety findings, part availability, and whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

FAQ

Common Answers To Your Questions

How is furnace efficiency measured?

Furnace energy efficiency is calculated with the AFUE, or the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating. The AFUE is a rating that compares how much heat a furnace will produce relative to the amount of energy necessary to produce the heat. If a furnace is rated at 85 percent AFUE, it means 15 percent of the energy used is lost and 85 percent actually becomes heat for your home or business.
What are the different types of air conditioner refrigerant?

If you have an air conditioning system that requires the old type of refrigerant, R-22, your system is still usable but only reclaimed or recycled R-22 can be used to service your air conditioner. R410-A is now the required standard for newer systems and has less environmental impact relative to the older refrigerant. Eventually, you will need to replace your air conditioner with one that uses R410-A, or have it modified so that it can use R410-A. The type of refrigerant your AC uses is only one of many reasons to consider upgrading, and if your existing unit is outdated, now might be a good time to look into having it replaced to boost energy efficiency, lessen environmental impact, and make sure you are operating a safe system. Not only will an upgraded cooling system make it easier to have your unit serviced, but it’ll also save you money on your annual cooling costs. Loren's Heating & Air in Salem, OR, offers the highest quality air conditioner replacement services.
Why are air conditioner efficiency ratings important?

In 2006, the Federal Government made it mandatory for all central air conditioning systems to have a minimum SEER of 13. SEER, or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio, is a measure of the cooling system’s performance. On the highest end of performance, cooling units are rated as high 23 SEER. As with anything, the better performance, the higher the cost. For a system with moderate to good efficiency, you should look for a model with a SEER rating of between 14 and 18. The EER, or the Energy Efficiency Rating, provides an indication of the cooling capacity of the system that you’ve had installed. The higher the EER number, the better the system’s cooling capacity.
